Bitcoin Breaks Through $80,000 Backed by Institutional Inflows; Analysts Divided on Sustainability of the Rally

Tapbit news, September 24 — Bitcoin recently broke through $80,000 and briefly touched $87,300. Analysts believe this rally has been supported by institutional capital and strong inflows into spot ETFs, but indicators such as trading volume, market breadth, and derivatives positioning show that there is still disagreement over whether the rally can continue.K33 said that Bitcoin's recent pullback has been significantly smaller in both magnitude and duration than the major bear markets of 2013, 2017, and 2021, and that the current cycle low may already be established. K33 also noted that Bitcoin still has room to catch up with gold and US equities.21Shares believes that the US SEC's introduction of an "innovation exemption" and the CFTC's advancement of related rulemaking provide further regulatory tailwinds for the crypto market. K33, meanwhile, believes that the fading of uncertainties such as the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision and the vote on the CLARITY Act also helped the market complete its breakout. However, Nexo remains cautious, pointing out that recent market trading volume has declined, the breadth of the rally has narrowed, and derivatives leverage is also rising, which could expose Bitcoin to risks of profit-taking or a temporary correction. Analysts at Capital.com believe that $87,000 to $88,000 is the near-term resistance zone, with the next target at $90,000 after a breakout, while on the downside, focus is on support at $84,000 to $85,000 and $80,000.Fundstrat founder Tom Lee said that the crypto bull market has already begun, arguing that this round of gains is being driven by factors including AI capital flowing back into the crypto market, improvements in crypto fundamentals such as tokenization and AI, and the end of the four-year cycle.[Source]

White House aide denies Clarity Act failed over Trump’s crypto interests

Patrick Witt, executive director of the White House crypto council, denied claims that the Clarity Act failed in the Senate last week because of President Donald Trump’s personal crypto interests, according to CoinDesk.Speaking at a conference at Georgetown University, Witt said Democrats had politicized the issue. He said a recently passed House bill did not include strict government ethics review provisions, while the main focus of the debate over the Clarity Act was the president, and Trump agreed to what Witt described as unprecedented ethics provisions. Witt also argued it was ironic for Democrats to raise concerns about improper conflicts of interest on the grounds that Trump was shaping crypto policy while running crypto businesses, adding that many senators on the Banking Committee hold and trade shares in financial services companies they regulate.

Fed's Barkin: Last week's rate hike 'will help' restore price stability, will watch if more hikes are needed

Tapbit news, September 23, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond President Tom Barkin warned that the inflation shock may take some time to subside, and there is a risk that elevated inflationary pressures become entrenched. In a speech detailing his latest outlook on the economy and monetary policy for the FOMC, Barkin said the Fed's rate hike last week will help slow inflation, but he did not send a clear signal on whether further tightening is needed. Instead, the Fed official made clear that supply shocks are no longer one-off or temporary, but are causing persistent price pressures across the economy.Barkin said: "Where do we go from here? We are committed to bringing inflation back down to our 2% target on a sustainable basis. Last week's rate hike will help. Whether additional hikes are needed, and how many? We will see." Barkin does not have a vote on the FOMC this year. The Fed official laid out two scenarios for the future path of inflation. The first is that price pressures cool rapidly as recent shocks fade; the second is that inflationary pressures linger.Barkin said: "I am open-minded that inflation could come down in the near term. Some of the recent shocks may reverse." Consumers may "start to reach their limits," investment may slow, and employment may "soften." "On the other hand, inflation may prove more stubborn. Temporary shocks may drag on longer," he said. "New cost pressures may emerge. Tighter demand conditions may pass through to prices, and the effects of current inflation may also pass through to prices."In addition, Barkin expressed optimism in his economic outlook. He said: "The economy and labor market remain on solid footing. We hear from businesses that economic conditions are at least stabilizing, if not strengthening further."
